Nevada Gaming Commission Discusses Recreational Marijuana Rules in Casinos
In a meeting led by Governor Brian Sandoval, commissioners discussed how the federal law affects what kinds of business endeavors the state’s casino industry could and could not participate in. Considering that Nevada controls approximately 30% of the country’s commercial gambling market, the stakes couldn’t be higher for the casino industry.
Nevertheless, business leaders from all industries are having trouble ignoring the demand for recreational marijuana in Las Vegas and across the entire country.
Considering the impact of Las Vegas recreational marijuana laws
Until now, the Nevada Gaming Commission’s stance has been clear: cannabis is simply not welcome. And as most hotels have gaming machines, that means 420 friendly hotels in Las Vegas don’t exist for the city’s millions of tourists. Despite this, recreational and medical marijuana sales in the US have enjoyed consistent year-over-year growth with sales anticipated to reach an incredible $30 billion by 2021.
According to Sandoval, the goal of the meeting was to discuss “potential intersections” of the business interests for the cannabis and gaming industries. In addition to opening remarks by Sandoval about recreational marijuana rules in casinos, commissioners also heard from the public, including Attorney Brian Barnes with Cooper & Kirk, PLLC and Cassandra Farrington, CEO of Marijuana Business Daily and its semi-annual cannabis industry event MJBizCon.
While the Nevada Gaming Commission’s recommendations for recreational marijuana rules in casinos aren’t likely to change overnight, the commission will be reconvening at the beginning of 2018 to continue the discussion of Las Vegas drug laws.
