Marijuana Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

Marijuana Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

Considering cannabis has been around for thousands of years, it’s surprising how much we still don’t know about the plant. You may already know a few strange facts about weed, like how Tupac Shakur was rolled and smoked after his death, but there are many facts still yet to be discovered. Either way, we bet you probably don’t know the following weed facts or at least one or two of them.

4 Facts About Weed You Probably Didn’t Know

1. The first purchase made online was for marijuana

These days, over 70% of shoppers are making purchases online. Even weed can be legally sold online in Nevada. Seriously, buy it from Las Vegas ReLeaf if you are a local medical marijuana patient.

But back to the point. The first ever online purchase was for none other than some pot. The purchase happened in the early 1970s by Stanford and MIT students, who used the ARPANET to exchange an undisclosed amount of weed. Of course, the platform they used looks nothing like typical e-commerce site today, and there is no evidence the weed actually made it across the country, or that money was involved. But still, it’s nice to know it all got started with a few college kids trying to buy weed.

2. Carl Sagan was a pothead and advocate of marijuana use

You read that right. Carl Sagan, one of the most famous scientists of our time, smoked weed regularly since the early 1960s on. He believed the plant “provided him with creative and scientific insights.” Of course, this was the time when Reefer Madness was still running wild, and he couldn’t openly admit to marijuana use. So he wrote an essay, kept his identity secret by signing it by “Mr. X,” and described his positive experiences with marijuana. His identity as Mr. X did not come to light until after his death.

3. Hemp was used in a Propaganda film against the Nazi’s, titled “Hemp for Victory

Before the federal government made hemp, a form of the cannabis plant, illegal, it was used extensively for production. During World War II, the government encouraged farmers to grow the crop to help with the war effort. They created this film in 1942, even though prohibition on cannabis hemp began in 1937. The funny thing is the government denied the existence of this film until 1989, when marijuana advocate Jack Herer donated his VHS copy to the Library of Congress. See the film below:

4. In 1894 The Indian Government declared marijuana harmless

Marijuana has been used across the globe for thousands of years. Many know that people in Ancient China used it medicinally, but did you know that India used it to party? Everything from religious ceremonies to chill get-togethers, the people of India thoroughly enjoyed mainstream usage of the plant.

It was so popular at one time the British Colonial Government developed a study to test how it was affecting the population. Results found that not only was the plant harmless in the mainstream, but putting a ban on it might actually prove to be detrimental. The government announced in 1894 that weed was harmless through the report titled “The Indian Hemp Drugs Commission report.

These are just a few of the many good facts about weed that most people just don’t know. As we continued research to learn more about the plant and its many medicinal benefits, new facts are bound to come to light, too.
