Initially held every November in Amsterdam, this stoner culture staple invites judges from around the world to smoke, sample, and vote for their favorite cannabis strains and products. Only hosted in states with legalized medical or recreational marijuana laws, the Cannabis Cup is one of the most well-known events that allows the cannabis community to learn, network, and celebrate.
Although this year’s Las Vegas version of the Cannabis Cup Festival ended early due to severe winds, celebrations of cannabis culture have been held at different venues across the country. The High Times hosted the first Cannabis Cup in the United States in 2010. Since then, the annual event has expanded to include multiple festivals throughout the country. Since the festival’s US launch, people have been holding cannabis cups in Nevada, Northern and Southern California, Denver, Michigan, and Seattle with plans for a Rhode Island cannabis cup this coming October.
The Medical Cannabis Cup hosted by High Times celebrates medical cannabis in states with medical marijuana laws. Alternately, the U.S. Cannabis Cup celebrates adult use cannabis in states with laws protecting marijuana for adult recreational use. During each festival, marijuana strains, products, and accessories are sampled, judged, and awarded a ‘Cannabis Cup’ in various categories.
This year, High Times announced it was reformatting their competition, so each festival is considered a Regional Competition. They’ll culminate in a World Championship Cannabis Cup at the end of the year. Then, companies whose products placed in the Top 10 of each category in the regional competition will automatically qualify for entry into the World Championship Cup for the chance to be declared the High Times Cup Winner 2017.
To be eligible, teams of judges vote for the best strains (indica, sativa, and hybrid), concentrates, edibles, and the highest level of cannabinoids in cannabis products. As an attendee, you’ll also get a chance to have your voice heard. Festival-goers can vote for best booth, best products, and best glass accessories in each Cannabis Cup exposition.
Entries get scored according to a two-tiered digital system that includes both a qualitative score from judges and a quantitative score as a result of lab tests. Each qualitative score accounts for 75% of the total score. To that end, judges look at everything from aroma and taste, to visual aesthetics, smoking experience, and burnability when determining their scores.
In addition to the exposition and opportunity for marijuana industry insiders to connect, the High Times Cannabis Cup also features a variety of live music acts, educational seminars, and much more. Each Cup gives attendees the opportunity to learn from different professionals in the space while also providing immersive experiences like dab rig expositions, massage and spa tents, and even vape pen clinics.
