Regardless of what you’re lighting up, there can be some health side effects. However, is weed worse than cigarettes? So far, researchers and doctors have answered with a resounding NO. Check out the latest info on the health effects of weed smoke vs. cigarette smoke.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, smoking tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Cigarettes have also been linked to cancer, vascular disease and a variety of adverse pulmonary effects and disorders, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. While long-term exposure to tobacco smoke has been proven to be harmful to smokers’ health, the same cannot be said for smokers of cannabis.
According to an increasing number of scientific findings, when you compare weed smoke vs. cigarette smoke, you’ll find a considerable difference in their health effects. According to well-known cannabis researcher and expert, Dr. Robert Melamede, although smoke from tobacco and weed have some similar properties, the two substances have different pharmacological properties and are not equally carcinogenic.
While tobacco products and cigarettes have been found to be linked to a variety of cancers and chronic diseases, similar studies conducted on marijuana smokers have failed to identify an association between marijuana smoke exposure and an elevated risk of smoking-related cancers (cancers of the lung, neck, and heart).
One of the most cited and well-known studies was conducted by UCLA’s School of Medicine in 2006. Their study not only concluded that was no association between marijuana use and lung cancer. These findings were further solidified in 2014 when the International Journal of Cancer published a meta-analysis of other case-controlled marijuana studies. According to the Journal, “Results from our pooled analyses provide little evidence for an increased risk of lung cancer among habitual or long-term cannabis smokers.”
COPD is the go-to term for physicians when describing patients who are suffering from progressive lung diseases like emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and many more. COPD can develop years before patients begin to notice their symptoms. It is recognized as the third leading cause of death in the US by the American Lung Association.
