Here’s the thing, no matter where the smoke is coming from, if it enters your lungs, you’re causing them some form of harm. Whether the smoke is from a cigarette or from a campfire, it isn’t doing your lungs any favors. Cannabis smoke, however, seems to be the exception to the rule. But why? How?
Typically, when determining if smoke is or isn’t safe, scientists research how many people get lung cancer after exposing their lungs to the smoke for a lifetime (or certain period). Recent studies have shown that regular cannabis smokers are just as likely to get lung cancer as the average non-smoker.
That leads us to believe that somehow, cannabis smoke isn’t causing damage. Another study found that regular cannabis smokers didn’t show any signs of lung damage. However, two studies from a few years ago found that smoking cannabis left tar behind in the lungs but somehow did not raise the risk of cancer.
Although it is believed that cannabis smoke contains most of the same cancer-causing toxins that tobacco does. One of the most likely explanation is the THC in marijuana. In studies performed on animals, THC has slowed and helped prevent the growth of tumors.
It is also possible that the cannabinoid CBD is to thank. It has shown signs of having the ability to prevent cancer cells from infecting other cells. Therefore, it prevents cancer from spreading.
Unfortunately, cancer is not the only negative effect that inhaling smoke can have. Heavy smokers have reported having trouble exhaling and experienced inflammation in their lungs. The inflammation can cause symptoms similar to asthma after a life of regularly inhaling cannabis smoke.
One of the best and easiest ways to avoid damaging your lungs is to switch to another form of consumption. Edibles, of course, don’t cause any damage to your lungs. However, if smoking is your favorite way to experience relief, there are still options for you.
Using a vape is the best way to smoke if you are trying to avoid lung damage. Vaporizers heat the herb only just as much as it needs to. It never heats it quite to the point of combustion like a flame does when smoking from a joint, pipe, or bong. Toxins aren’t released from the cannabis unless it reaches the point of combustion.
